In a bid to prevent further hardship for the Nigerian people, the Senate has cautioned the Federal Government against increasing electricity tariffs. The warning, issued during a recent plenary session presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, comes amidst growing concerns about the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

The Senate has also taken steps to investigate the Minister of Power’s claim of over N2 trillion in subsidy requirements, as well as a substantial debt owed to electricity Generation Companies (GENCOs) and gas companies. This move follows apprehension among senators regarding the potential consequences of raising electricity tariffs at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with hunger and economic hardship.

Senator Aminu Iya Abba, supported by 10 other lawmakers, brought forth a motion to address the planned electricity tariff hike, emphasizing the adverse impact it could have on the populace. Additionally, the motion called for an end to the arbitrary billing of unmetered customers by electricity companies.

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, echoed these concerns, urging the Federal Government to prioritize alleviating the suffering of its citizens before considering any increase in electricity tariffs.

Following a thorough debate, the Senate reached a resolution urging the Federal Government to refrain from implementing the proposed electricity tariff hike in order to safeguard the interests of the Nigerian people. Moreover, the Senate has called for an investigation into the Minister of Power’s assertion of the N2 trillion subsidy requirement, with the aim of preventing a recurrence of past scandals such as the fuel subsidy debacle.
