African Union Gathers High-Level Panel for Sudan Crisis Resolution

The Expanded Mechanism for the Resolution of the Sudan Crisis recently convened a crucial meeting of Permanent Representatives to the African Union, introducing the newly-appointed AU High-Level Panel for Sudan on 20th February 2024.

Dignitaries from various international bodies including the African Union Commission, IGAD, United Nations, League of Arab States, European Union, and several countries such as Mozambique, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, United States, United Kingdom, Norway, Turkey, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates were present at the meeting.

The participants voiced their support for the newly-appointed High-Level Panel and expressed deep concern over the persisting conflict in Sudan. They emphasized the necessity of working towards a ceasefire, facilitating an inclusive political process, and coordinating mediation initiatives. Additionally, they stressed the importance of preparing for the post-conflict phase.

The High-Level Panel underscored its commitment to operate in line with the AU Roadmap for the Resolution of the Crisis in Sudan, ensuring the inclusivity of all Sudanese stakeholders and working with all partners and stakeholders towards sustainable peace in Sudan.

The Panel announced its plans to embark on consultative visits to engage with key Sudanese stakeholders and regional partners in the near future.
