The House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs of the Taraba State House of Assembly has vowed to uphold fairness and equity amidst the enduring traditional leadership conflict in Takum Local Government Area.
The commitment was affirmed during a public hearing held in the State House of Assembly chamber in Jalingo, in response to an executive bill presented by Governor Agbu Kefas aimed at restructuring the traditional leadership system in the council.
Representatives from diverse ethnic groups in Takum expressed varying perspectives during the public hearing. While some endorsed the rotational proposal, others, particularly the Kuteb ethnic group, advocated for exclusive rights to the traditional stool.
The ethnic groups expressed appreciation to the governor for intervening in the prolonged dispute. They urged the committee, led by former Speaker Peter Abel Diah, to ensure impartiality and transparency in their deliberations.
In his remarks, Diah emphasized the significance of unity among the ethnic groups, urging them to overcome the animosity and resentment that have plagued the community for years.
He assured the public of the committee’s unwavering commitment to finding a lasting resolution, stating that its report would undergo thorough consideration by the 24 members of the Assembly.
The Takum traditional stool has remained unoccupied for the past 26 years, igniting controversies and resulting in loss of lives and destruction of properties.
