U.S. Honors Nigerian Diplomat Amina Smaila for Exceptional Public Service

The Consul General of Nigeria in Atlanta, Amb. Amina Smaila, has been honored by the State of Georgia for her dedicated and selfless commitment to public service. The House of Representatives of Georgia presented this prestigious award in recognition of Smaila’s outstanding diplomatic skills, extensive service in the Nigerian Foreign Service, and her significant contributions to the state’s betterment.

A resolution, signed by the Clerk of the House of Representatives, William Reily, highlighted Smaila’s exceptional career in public administration and policy development, including her senior roles in the Nigerian Foreign Service and the numerous honors she has received, such as the delivery of a commencement speech at Wesleyan College and the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award by the World Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta.

The resolution also emphasized Smaila’s inspiration to others through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern for fellow citizens. Lawmakers praised her for her vision and unwavering commitment to excellence in public service, concluding that it was fitting to recognize her remarkable accomplishments. Miriam Udeozo, Consul at the Consulate of Nigeria in Atlanta, further elaborated on Smaila’s extraordinary qualities that led to her receiving this honor, as well as other recognitions for her diplomatic work in reinforcing ties between Nigeria and the United States.

Udeozo highlighted Smaila’s receipt of the Phoenix Award from Atlanta’s Mayor Andre Dickens and the Courageous Women Award by Courageous Women in Action, Atlanta, Georgia. Additionally, under Smaila’s leadership, the Independence Day of Nigeria and Nigeria’s Day for Art and Culture in the State of Georgia were formally recognized, showcasing Smaila’s dedication to promoting Nigerian and African art and culture.

Through her exceptional leadership and commitment to strengthening international relations and promoting cultural exchange, Amina Smaila’s contributions have not only been recognized by the State of Georgia but resonated widely, drawing attention to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
