Abia State Governor Seeks US Support for Economic Development

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has appealed to the United States consulate for assistance in advancing trade, investment, and various economic sectors within the state. The Governor emphasized the urgent need for finance, power, and logistics support to bolster the business environment, particularly in the digital economy.

During a meeting with the Political and Economic Section Chief of the US Consulate in Lagos, Mike Ervin, Governor Otti outlined the challenges faced by the state, including the imminent power supply issues in Aba. He mentioned the upcoming commissioning of the Geometric power plant by President Bola Tinubu, slated for Monday, 26th February 2024, as a step towards addressing this concern.

Emphasizing the significance of Abia as a major trading and industrial center in Nigeria, the Governor highlighted the thriving shoe manufacturing, fabric, and garment industries in Aba. He expressed regret over the infrastructural decay that had previously led businesses to relocate to other states but noted a positive trend of their gradual return, attributing it to his administration’s efforts in repairing numerous roads, particularly in Aba.

Governor Otti urged the United States to assist in resolving the power problem and address the challenge of accessing finance, suggesting potential collaborations to mitigate the risks associated with foreign currency funding.

Mike Ervin, representing the US Consulate, outlined their mission to enhance bilateral trade and investment for mutual prosperity between the United States and Nigeria, covering the 17 Southern States of Nigeria.

The Governor’s plea for support signifies a critical step towards fostering economic growth and stability, positioning Abia State to leverage international partnerships for sustainable development.
