President Bola Tinubu, also serving as the Chairman of the Authority of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has reaffirmed his dedication to implementing judicial reforms within the region. Stressing the crucial role of an accountable and principled judicial system in bolstering democracy, Tinubu emphasized the judiciary as the ultimate source of hope for ordinary individuals.

During a meeting with the ECOWAS Judicial Council led by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice of Nigeria and Council Chairman, at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu expressed his commitment to fortifying democracy through the protection and enhancement of the judiciary. He highlighted, “We are committed to transformative democracy because we believe the judiciary can protect democracy.”

Assuring wholehearted support for the experienced and knowledgeable members of the judiciary, Tinubu asserted, “We are ready to support you as learned minds who have the requisite experience and institutional memory to comprehensively reform our institutions.” Serving as the Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu underscored the pivotal role of the judiciary in upholding democracy.

Furthermore, Tinubu lauded judges from member-states for their active participation in the two-day council meeting in Abuja and commended the successful conclusion of their discussions. He assured the participants that their recommendations would be given the utmost consideration by the Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS. Tinubu pledged to collaborate with the judicial council to leverage their expertise in promoting justice within the region and beyond.

In closing, Tinubu reaffirmed the significance of the judicial system, proclaiming, “You are truly the last hope of the common man across our sub-region.” With this commitment to judicial reform, Tinubu has set forth a vision aimed at fortifying democracy and justice, positioning the judiciary as the bedrock of hope for the people.
