Kaduna Electric has announced its commitment to complying with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) directive to refund customers who were overbilled. In a statement by the Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, the company expressed its readiness to adhere to NERC’s mandate.

The directive comes as a result of NERC’s Capping Order, which addresses the issue of overbilling unmetered customers. The order aims to align estimated bills for unmetered customers with the measured consumption of metered customers on the same supply feeder.

Abdulazeez Abdullahi emphasized that customers set to receive refunds must settle all outstanding debts to avoid disconnection. He also highlighted the company’s struggle with a substantial debt burden, impeding its ability to provide efficient service to customers.

Moreover, Kaduna Electric stressed its intolerance for customers accruing electricity debts. Operating in Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara states, the company faces challenges in light of recent developments in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. Distribution companies are mandated to ensure full remittance to the market for energy received and wheeled to them.

The company outlined the significance of overcoming financial constraints within the sector to ensure robust electricity supply. It emphasized that addressing the issue of illiquidity can only be achieved through prompt payments for energy consumed by customers.
