Sen. Monday Okpebholo, hailing from Edo Central and a member of the National Assembly, has clinched the nomination of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming governorship election in Edo state on September 21.
The announcement came from Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River, who presided over the APC supplementary primary election in Benin, declaring Sen. Okpebholo as the victor with an impressive 12,433 votes, surpassing 11 other contenders in the race.
The tides had initially favored Rep Dennis Idahosa, a representative from Ovia Federal Constituency, proclaimed as the primary winner by Governor Hope Uzodinma on February 17.
Nevertheless, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC intervened, deeming the election results inconclusive. Consequently, a supplementary primary was scheduled for Thursday, overseen by Governor Bassey Otu, replacing Governor Uzodinma as the election chair.
In a dramatic turn of events, Idahosa, leading with 4,483 votes in the initial count, saw Okpebholo overtake him in the rerun with an impressive 6,541 votes.
