In a recent operation, the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base in Badagry, Lagos State, successfully intercepted 15,540 litres of petrol concealed in a building along the Badagry creeks.

The Commanding Officer, Navy Capt. B A Amakiri, disclosed that naval operatives discovered 518 × 30-liter jerry cans on Thursday around 11:00 a.m. at Agbojetho-Akorin Beach along the Badagry-Seme Road. Acting on intelligence regarding suspected smugglers in the area, the navy swiftly responded to the tip-off.

Amakiri explained that upon investigation, the team found the jerry cans containing the petrol, totaling 15,540 liters with a value of ₦9,479,400 at the prevailing rate. The perpetrators managed to evade capture upon learning of the naval team’s approach, potentially aiming to smuggle the product into Benin Republic.

Efforts to locate additional contraband and suspects in nearby communities yielded no further results. Amakiri reaffirmed the navy’s dedication to combating smuggling, ensuring economic saboteurs face obstacles in their illicit activities.

Calling on the public for cooperation, Amakiri stressed the importance of citizens providing information to combat such criminal acts. He highlighted the commitment of Naval authorities, including Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla and Rear Adm. Mustapha Hussan of the Western Naval Command, in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests.

Through initiatives like Operation Water Guard, the Nigerian Navy remains vigilant in maintaining a competent force for national security, thwarting illegal activities that threaten the nation’s economic stability.
