ECOWAS Urged to Lift Sanctions on Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger

Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the former President of ECOWAS Commission, has called upon the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to remove the sanctions imposed on Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. These sanctions were a response to recent military coups in these countries.

In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Chambas, who now serves as the African Union’s High Representative for ‘Silencing the Guns in Africa,’ emphasized the importance of unity within the region. He urged military leaders in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to reconsider their threats to withdraw from ECOWAS and abide by the established protocols.

Chambas echoed the sentiments of former Nigerian Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), who called for an end to conflicts and emphasized the strength that comes from unity. He stressed the need for all ECOWAS member states to stand together in the face of challenges that have plagued the sub-region.

Recognizing the pivotal role played by Gen. Gowon in the formation of ECOWAS nearly 50 years ago, Chambas highlighted the importance of preserving the Founder’s legacy. He urged current leaders to emulate Gowon’s commitment to the unity and shared purpose of ECOWAS.

Looking ahead to the upcoming ECOWAS Summit in Abuja, Chambas expressed confidence in the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. He anticipated that President Tinubu would work towards lifting sanctions on Mali and other affected countries, as well as finding sustainable solutions to the current crises.

Chambas commended President Tinubu’s democratic values and practical approach to governance, emphasizing his belief in the President’s ability to uphold ECOWAS unity. He noted the collaboration between President Tinubu and ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Touré to navigate the diplomatic challenges facing the region.

As ECOWAS prepares to address the pressing issues at hand, Chambas reiterated the importance of unity in overcoming shared challenges and reiterated the message of solidarity within the West African community.

This call for solidarity and cooperation resonates as ECOWAS navigates a critical juncture in its history, with the hope of finding common ground and sustainable solutions to ensure a stable and prosperous future for all member states.
