In a somber revelation, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Jide Idris, disclosed that beyond the well-known Lassa Fever outbreak, the country has been grappling with other deadly diseases.
During a recent press briefing held in Abuja, Dr. Idris shared that diphtheria, measles, and meningitis have collectively taken the lives of 711 individuals between 2022 and 2024.
The staggering statistics reveal that Nigeria has witnessed 507 cases of meningitis resulting in 63 fatalities since October 2023, as well as 16,248 cases of diphtheria leading to 646 deaths since 2022.
Furthermore, within the first five weeks of 2024 alone, the country has reported 516 confirmed cases of measles, and unfortunately, two casualties due to the disease.
Dr. Idris emphasized the urgent need to address these alarming figures, stating, “These numbers are alarming and unacceptable to the government. It is our collective responsibility to prioritize and protect our health.”
Despite the concerning situation, the NCDC DG expressed gratitude towards the state governments, healthcare workers, and other stakeholders for their prompt response to the outbreaks.
He remarked, “We commend the diligent efforts of the affected State Governments, the Federal Capital Territory, State Ministries of Health, healthcare professionals, and all others involved in managing these crises. Through collaboration, we will continue extending our support.”
Highlighting the significance of health security as a crucial pillar in the country’s healthcare agenda, Dr. Idris emphasized the essential role of every individual in fostering positive health practices.
As Nigeria confronts these healthcare challenges, unity and proactive measures are deemed essential in safeguarding the well-being of the nation.
