The Association of People affected by leprosy in Zamfara State is raising concerns about the stigma faced by its members. Shehu Abdulahi S/Fada, the chairman of the Association, voiced out these issues during a press conference in Gusau, the State capital.

Abdulahi highlighted how individuals affected by leprosy are being shunned by society, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and equal treatment. Sharing his personal experience of facing avoidance and humiliation even after being cured of leprosy, he called for a shift in attitudes towards leprosy-affected individuals.

He also shed light on the challenges faced by the leprosy clinic in Gusau, emphasizing the urgent need for renovation and expansion. Abdulahi urged the State government to step in and support those living with leprosy by improving the clinic’s facilities.

Furthermore, Abdulahi debunked misconceptions about leprosy, clarifying that it is neither inherited nor untreatable. He acknowledged the support provided by organizations like Leprosy Missions in Nigeria and other international donors, working hand in hand with the government to provide necessary medication and assistance to those affected.

The plea from the Association of People affected by leprosy in Zamfara State serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing stigmatization and ensuring the well-being of all individuals, irrespective of their health conditions.
