In a significant move towards improving Nigerian football, the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, announced President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the payment of outstanding debts inherited by the Super Eagles. This decision underscores Tinubu’s commitment to the national team and the sport’s development in the country.
Nigeria’s impressive performance at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire was attributed to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders in Nigerian football, according to Enoh. While celebrating this success, he also noted the ongoing work required by the Ministry and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to elevate Nigerian football to a higher standing both in Africa and globally.
During a recent media interview, Enoh stressed the importance of nurturing local football talent and enhancing the Nigerian league as crucial steps towards the sport’s overall advancement. Increased funding was highlighted as a key factor in achieving these goals.
The statement, conveyed by Diana-Mary Nsan, S.A. Media to the Minister of Sports Development, commended the leadership’s commitment to resolving the inherited debts, setting a positive tone for the Super Eagles’ future endeavors.
Enoh outlined the upcoming objectives for Nigerian football, focusing on sustaining the momentum from AFCON 2023 and securing qualifications for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Addressing various issues such as coaching standards and the integration of local and foreign-based players, he emphasized the need to enhance competitiveness and technical skills within the domestic football landscape.
With a forward-looking approach, Nigeria aims to strengthen its football infrastructure and streamline internal mechanisms to achieve sustainable success at both regional and global levels.
