Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu of Edo State has voiced concerns over an alleged plot to oust him from office. The apprehension heightened following his emergence as the factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the forthcoming gubernatorial election. Shaibu disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja over the weekend.

In a conflicting turn of events, the PDP primary elections yielded contradictory results. While the official exercise announced Asue Ighodalo as the victor with 577 votes, a parallel process at Shaibu’s residence in Benin City declared him the winner by a significant margin of over 300 votes.

Expressing his distress, Shaibu narrated how his team had alerted him to discussions of impeachment due to his unwavering stance on contesting the election within the confines of the law. He asserted that defending his constitutional rights, even if it provokes impeachment threats, is non-negotiable. The deputy governor emphasized that seeking legal redress, if needed, remains a viable option to uphold justice.

The unfolding political drama in Edo State underscores the tension and power struggles surrounding the upcoming election. Shaibu’s defiance in the face of adversity highlights a turbulent period marked by conflicting interests and political maneuvering. As the situation escalates, the judiciary stands as a beacon of hope to resolve constitutional disputes and uphold democratic principles.
