In a recent event in Abuja, Dr. Kanu Agabi, former Attorney-General of the Federation, praised the Nigerian judiciary as superior to the legislative and executive branches. He emphasized the crucial role of the judiciary in preserving the nation’s unity, asserting that without it, Nigeria would have faced disintegration long ago.

Dr. Agabi acknowledged the occasional flaws in judgment but attributed them to the complexities of the legal system rather than the judges. He highlighted the need for consistent application of the law, especially in election-related cases, to ensure justice prevails.

Joining the discourse, former High Court Judge, Justice Ambrose Namdi, highlighted the challenges faced by judges due to politically motivated cases lacking merit. He stressed the importance of politicians respecting legal boundaries to ease the burden on the judiciary.

Uche Secondus, former National Chairman of PDP, advocated for a comprehensive reform of the judiciary, citing instances of political interference and inconsistent rulings. He urged for a systemic shift towards a more transparent and accountable judicial system.

Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, former Governor of Enugu State, echoed the sentiment of upholding justice in the courts and urged judges to regain the trust and respect of the Nigerian populace. He emphasized the rich history of Nigerian judicial excellence and called for a return to those standards.

The call for internal democracy within political parties was also emphasized to reduce the unnecessary burden on the courts. The speakers collectively stressed the need for a reformed, efficient, and impartial judiciary to uphold the rule of law and restore public trust.

The insightful discussions underscored the pivotal role of the judiciary in maintaining stability and fairness in Nigeria’s political landscape. It is imperative for all stakeholders to collaborate towards a judiciary that truly serves the people and upholds justice without bias or external influence.
