The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, has stated that over 15,000 herders lost their lives in the past ten years due to various conflicts and criminal activities. At a recent National Executive Council meeting in Niger State, the association’s national president, Baba Othman Ngalzarma, revealed that a shocking 4 million cattle were rustled during the same period.

Mr. Ngalzarma expressed concern over the misrepresentation of pastoralists as criminals, emphasizing that they are often the primary victims of banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of violence. While acknowledging the existence of criminal elements within their community, he highlighted the unfair generalization that tarnishes the reputation of all Fulani herdsmen.

Moreover, he criticized the lack of compensation for victims of a military drone strike in Nasarawa State, urging the government to provide assistance to affected families. Additionally, Mr. Ngalzarma raised alarms about reported instances of unwarranted killings and looting of cows during military operations, calling for more accountability and restraint in such actions.

MACBAN remains committed to combating internal issues within the pastoralist community, including addressing criminal behavior, educating members on the risks of substance abuse, and curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms. The association’s efforts reflect a proactive approach to tackling challenges and promoting security within the livestock industry.
