The economic hardship in Nigeria triggered a powerful demonstration in Benin, Edo State, led by Pastor Azemhe Azena, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate for the upcoming governorship election. Alongside civil society organizations, Azemhe voiced concerns over the unbearable cost of living in the country.

In the midst of the protest, Azemhe, who serves as the Pastor of Omega Fire Ministry in Benin City, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to alleviate the economic crisis. He highlighted the immense burden faced by clergymen, attributing it to the escalating demands from congregants seeking financial assistance for essential needs like education, food, transportation, and healthcare.

“The faces of my congregation tell a story of immense suffering. The pressure on clergy and religious figures is overwhelming as they strive to support their communities. The escalating bills are taking a toll on us. Hunger is not just a concept; it is a stark reality for many individuals in our nation,” Azemhe stated passionately.

Drawing attention to the palpable anger and frustration brewing within society due to economic struggles, Azemhe emphasized the critical role of government in addressing the soaring cost of goods and services. He underscored the necessity for price controls to ensure that essential items remain accessible to the populace.

In a bold move, Leftist Austine Enabulele, the Interim Chairman of Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOCSO), issued a 14-day ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, demanding their resignation if they fail to rectify the nation’s economic woes. Enabulele condemned the rampant dollarization of the economy and urged immediate measures to stabilize the value of the national currency.

The protest reverberated through the city center, disrupting economic activities as demonstrators marched through the streets of Benin City. Their poignant message was echoed on placards bearing slogans such as ‘Nigerians are starving to death’, ‘Tinubu, end hunger and suffering in Nigeria’, and ‘FG, end the hunger in Nigeria now’.

The impassioned plea for economic reform and social justice underscores the deep-seated frustrations of Nigerians grappling with the harsh realities of everyday life. As the call for accountability and action grows louder, the spotlight remains on the government to address the pressing economic challenges facing the nation.
