Rise of Fake AI News Sites Highlights Global Misinformation Threat

A recent report revealed a concerning surge in the number of fake artificial intelligence (AI) news platforms, reaching a staggering 713 by February 22, 2023. NewsGuard, a reputable tool combating misinformation, released a comprehensive study titled ‘Tracking AI-enabled Misinformation,’ shedding light on this alarming trend.

The proliferation of these deceptive AI-generated websites has significantly contributed to the widespread dissemination of false information on a global scale. Data from NewsGuard illustrated a sharp increase in AI-generated sites peddling unverified or misleading content, soaring from fewer than 50 in May to approximately 600 in December 2023.

The report attributes this exponential growth of fake AI news platforms to the insatiable pursuit of ad revenue, emphasizing the financial incentives driving the creation and maintenance of such misleading websites. NewsGuard’s research team meticulously identified and categorized 713 Unreliable AI-generated news and information websites across 15 diverse languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish, and more.

These dubious websites often adopt generic names like iBusiness Day, Ireland Top News, and Daily Time Update, impersonating legitimate news sources and deceiving consumers. This deceptive strategy underscores the sophistication and insidious nature of the misinformation ecosystem propagated by AI technology.

In a related context, the call for regulating social media and ensuring the provision of accurate information for policy-making and national progress has gained prominence. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, voiced concerns in February regarding the imperative of enhancing information integrity in Nigeria and recognized the pivotal role of combating misinformation in shaping a transparent and informed society.
