Former South African Mayor Jailed for Sexual Assault

Former Mayor of Oudtshoorn, Mlandeli Abednico Nyuka, has been sentenced to five years in prison for sexually assaulting an employee in his office. This is Nyuka’s second conviction for a similar offense. The court found him guilty of luring the complainant into his office under false job promises and subjecting her to unwanted advances. Despite Nyuka’s denial and accusations, the court based its decision on witness testimonies and previous conviction evidence. The municipality is yet to comment on the case.

In a separate incident, two South African men arrested in Eswatini are not connected to the murder of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and DJ Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane. They are instead linked to a different murder and attempted murder case in Berea in 2023. Police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi emphasized the complexity of the Forbes case investigation and assured the public that further details will be shared as the inquiry progresses.

Critics have slammed Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s recent energy plan update as mere “window-dressing.” Experts question the lack of concrete solutions in the plan to address the energy crisis, particularly the ongoing breakdowns in the coal fleet totaling 16,000 megawatts. Energy expert Adil Nchabeleng expressed disappointment, highlighting the need for a budget and focused efforts to tackle Eskom’s plant breakdowns. He criticized the lack of evidence on how the government plans to end load shedding in the coming months.
