The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has called on the Federal Government to urgently release the withheld three-and-a-half-month salaries of its members, along with stagnant remunerations amidst rising inflation. In a recent press statement, CONUA President, ‘Niyi Sunmonu, expressed gratitude for the payment of four months’ salaries out of the seven and a half months that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was on strike. However, he emphasized that CONUA did not partake in the strike and urged the government to settle the remaining outstanding salaries promptly.
Sunmonu highlighted the importance of recognizing non-striking unions like CONUA and emphasized the need for fair treatment in line with the National Industrial Court of Nigeria’s judgment affirming CONUA as an independent Union. He stressed that withholding salaries from non-striking members goes against the Trade Disputes Act and called for immediate action to ensure peace within the academic community.
Furthermore, CONUA demanded the implementation of salary increments for tertiary institution staff as directed by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission. Sunmonu pointed out the long-standing stagnation in academics’ remuneration since 2009 and urged the government to address the issue promptly to alleviate the financial burden faced by Nigerian academics.
Additionally, CONUA called on President Bola Tinubu to rectify the dissolution of Governing Councils of Federal Universities in accordance with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act 2003, aligning with the government’s commitment to uphold university autonomy. The union emphasized the need to acknowledge the contributions of distinguished individuals serving in the educational sector and urged for swift action to address the situation.
As CONUA continues to advocate for the rights and welfare of its members, the call for fair treatment and timely action remains at the forefront of their mission. The union’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a conducive environment for academic excellence underscores the importance of addressing these pressing issues promptly and effectively.
