The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has made a plea to Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to accelerate progress on the deep seaport project. The Federal Executive Council had granted the operating license for the seaport last year, which is located at Olokola in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state. However, concerns have been raised about the lack of visible progress on the project.

During a seminar organized by the council in Akure, the state capital, the President of the Ondo State Office of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Engnr. Emmanuel Adewumi, expressed disappointment over the current state of the project. He emphasized the potential economic benefits of the deep seaport, including job creation and increased revenue for the state. Adewumi urged the government to take immediate action to kickstart the project.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mrs. Funmilayo Akinola, reassured that work on the Ondo Seaport was ongoing and not abandoned. The governor highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting import and export businesses in the state through infrastructure development and trade-friendly policies.

It is crucial for Ondo State to prioritize the deep seaport project to leverage its economic potential and compete with neighboring states like Ogun and Lagos. The successful establishment of the seaport could significantly boost the state’s economic growth and create numerous employment opportunities. The time is now for Ondo State to seize this opportunity and propel its development forward.
