The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released an update on the upcoming Edo State governorship election, setting the deadline for the submission of nomination forms for candidates on Sunday, March 24, 2024.
In a statement issued by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner & Chairman of the INEC Information and Voter Education Committee, it was revealed that the deadline for political parties to conduct primaries had already passed on February 24, 2024. The next step in the process is for parties to submit nomination forms through a dedicated online portal.
Political parties have been given a 20-day window, starting from March 4, 2024, to upload the Personal Particulars (Form EC9) and Names/List of Nominated candidates (Form EC9B) of their candidates. The portal will be open from 9.00am on March 4 and will close at 6.00pm on March 24, 2024. National Chairmen of political parties can collect access codes for the portal starting from today.
To assist political parties in the nomination process, the Commission is organizing refresher training for two Liaison Officers per party at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja. The training will take place from March 1 to March 4, 2024, with the Media Centre serving as a Help Desk for any party needing assistance.
INEC emphasized that the 20-day timeline is sufficient for parties to upload nomination forms for only two candidates per party – the Governorship candidate and running mate. Any requests for an extension beyond March 24, 2024, will not be granted, and parties are urged to strictly adhere to the timelines provided.
As the Edo State governorship election draws near, political parties are reminded to ensure compliance with the deadlines set by INEC to facilitate a smooth and efficient nomination process.
