The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken decisive steps to address internal conflicts ahead of the upcoming Edo State governorship election. The party has appointed Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Emmanuel Enoidem, as Chairman and Secretary, respectively, of an 11-member committee tasked with reconciling all aggrieved members.
The rift within the Edo State Chapter of the party stems from disagreements between Governor Godwin Obaseki, his Deputy Philip Shaibu, and their supporters over the PDP’s candidate. Following primaries held on February 22, 2023, two contenders emerged – Shaibu and Obaseki’s favored candidate, Asue Ighodalo, both claiming the governorship candidacy for the 2024 Edo elections.
In an effort to ease tensions and foster unity within the party, the PDP National Working Committee constituted the Edo State post-primary election reconciliation committee. This committee, led by Governor Bala Mohammed and Emmanuel Enoidem, aims to reconcile critical stakeholders and party members in Edo State ahead of the governorship election.
The committee includes prominent figures such as former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi; former Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson; and former Akwa Ibom State Military Administrator, Tunde Ogheha, among others. The PDP National Working Committee has urged all stakeholders and party members in Edo State to remain steadfast and work towards the success of the party and its Governorship Candidate, Dr. Asuerinme Ighodalo, in the September 21, 2024 Governorship Election in Edo State.
This proactive approach by the PDP demonstrates a commitment to internal cohesion and unity, essential for a successful electoral campaign. By addressing internal conflicts and fostering reconciliation, the party aims to present a united front and increase its chances of success in the upcoming election.
