Shell Nigeria Plc has announced its commitment to assisting the Nigerian government in providing electricity to millions of people through the use of renewable energy sources. These sources, such as solar, wind, and water, are naturally replenished and do not cause pollution like non-renewable sources such as coal, oil, and natural gas.

The Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, Mr. Osagie Okunbor, revealed this plan during a ministerial panel session at the 7th Nigerian International Energy Summit in Abuja. He emphasized the importance of deploying renewables as an off-grid energy source in areas not connected to the national grid.

In a statement released by the company’s Media Relations Manager, Abimbola Essien-Nelson, Shell expressed its commitment to helping Nigeria harness gas as a transition fuel. The company believes that Africa can unlock its energy potential and drive energy security, transition, and economic prosperity through partnerships, technological innovation, and sustainable financing.

Okunbor highlighted the significance of international partnerships in accessing best practices, advanced technologies, and innovations to optimize operations and reduce emissions. He mentioned the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership as an example of collaboration to monitor and mitigate methane emissions from operations.

The Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited, Mrs. Elohor Aiboni, reiterated the importance of energy security, transition, and finance in the global energy sector. She emphasized the need for secure and affordable energy access for economic growth, particularly in emerging economies like those in Africa.

Shell’s longstanding presence in countries like Nigeria, Egypt, Namibia, Ghana, South Africa, and Tunisia demonstrates its commitment to developing the energy sector in Africa. The company is working closely with governments, partners, and stakeholders to promote Nigerian content development, harness gas as a transition fuel, and deploy renewables for off-grid energy solutions.

Overall, Shell’s efforts in collaboration and innovation are driving progress in the energy sector, creating more opportunities for sustainable energy solutions in Africa and beyond.
