Robert Kyagulanyi Accuses Mathias Mpuuga of Corruption and Abuse of Office

The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, has made bold claims against his deputy, Mathias Mpuuga, accusing him of corruption and abuse of office. According to Kyagulanyi, Mpuuga admitted to wrongdoing and apologised during a meeting with party leaders. The controversy stems from a meeting of the Parliamentary Commission, chaired by Speaker Anita Among, where Mpuuga and his three commissioners were awarded nearly Shs2bn of taxpayer’s money as a “service reward”.

Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, challenged Mpuuga to explain the circumstances surrounding the Shs500m award, suggesting that it was a result of “negotiation” involving ‘give and take’. In response, Mpuuga released a statement denying any wrongdoing and accusing NUP of targeting him for years.

Bobi Wine took to social media to highlight the legal and moral implications of the award, questioning the justification for such a large sum of money being allocated to Mpuuga and his colleagues. He cited the Leadership Code Act, which prohibits leaders from participating in discussions where their personal interests are at stake, suggesting that Mpuuga’s involvement in the decision-making process was a conflict of interest.

The controversy has sparked a debate within NUP, with Bobi Wine calling for Mpuuga to resign from the Parliamentary Commission and apologise to the nation. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in public office, pointing out that the award was not rooted in any law or regulation.

As the fallout between Kyagulanyi and Mpuuga continues, the future of the NUP deputy president remains uncertain. While Mpuuga enjoys support from influential institutions like Buganda Kingdom and the Catholic Church, he may need to address the concerns raised by Bobi Wine and other party members to regain trust and credibility.

The saga highlights the importance of ethical leadership and integrity in politics, as well as the need for accountability and transparency in the use of public funds. As the story unfolds, the international community watches closely to see how the situation will be resolved and what impact it will have on Uganda’s political landscape.
