Nigerian Wrestlers Depart Yenagoa for 13th African Games in Accra

Nigerian wrestlers have bid farewell to their preparatory base in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, as they gear up for the 13th African Games. Led by the president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, the 20-man contingent departed from the Port Harcourt Airport for Abuja on Tuesday, before heading to Accra, Ghana on Wednesday.

With high hopes and determination, Igali expressed optimism for the team’s success at the games. “Our athletes have been in training camp here in Yenagoa, and I believe that with 100% effort, we will bring glory to Nigeria,” he said.

Olympic silver medalist and captain of the Nigeria Wrestling team, Blessing Oborodudu, shared her aspirations of defending her title and making her country proud. “My expectation is to perform my best and by God’s grace, I will bring home the gold medal,” she stated.

Despite being a debutant at the African Games, Ashton Mutuwa, competing in the 125kg category, exuded confidence in his abilities. “I’m going there with high expectations and I’m going to wrestle hard. I’ve been training rigorously and I aim to clinch the gold,” he affirmed.

The 13th African Games are set to kick off on March 8th, with the wrestling event scheduled for March 9th, 10th, and 11th in Accra, Ghana. The Nigerian wrestling team comprises a talented lineup of athletes across different weight categories, including Genesis Miesinnei Mercy, Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye, and Emmanuel Chinonso Nworie, among others.

As the team sets its sights on victory, the officials accompanying them, including Purity Akuh and Victor Kodei, are ready to provide support and guidance every step of the way. With determination and dedication, the Nigerian wrestlers are poised to make their mark at the 13th African Games and bring honor to their nation.
