Enugu State Mining Communities Demand Environmental Safety Compliance

Mining communities in Enugu State are raising alarm over the environmental safety violations and health risks posed by coal mining activities in their areas. The residents have seen their sources of drinking water and livelihoods contaminated by the operations of mining companies, prompting them to call on the Enugu State Government to step in and enforce global best practices to protect them from pollution and health hazards.

At a recent press conference in Enugu, traditional rulers and community leaders spoke out against the irresponsible behavior of some mining companies, accusing them of destroying vegetation and farmlands through environmental degradation. They emphasized the need to review the mining consent granted to companies that have failed to meet expectations and have shown a blatant disregard for the well-being of the local population.

The traditional ruler of Nsude autonomous community, Igwe George Ejikeme Onoh, urged individuals and organizations involved in mining to ensure they have obtained proper consent from the communities and are following ethical and environmental standards to ensure the safety of the host communities. He stressed the importance of reaching out to the government through the Secretary of the State Government to verify compliance with necessary measures.

The decision to withdraw consent from non-compliant mining companies was made collectively by the affected communities, with immediate effect. Signatories to the statement included prominent figures such as Igwe John E. Ugwu, Mbah Cyril Eze, Engr. Chibuzor Ngene, Obiesie Walter Onyeka, Eze Chinedu, and Igwe Ozor Paulinus, representing various communities in Enugu State.

The call for accountability and environmental responsibility in the mining sector highlights the urgent need to prioritize the well-being of local communities and protect the environment from further degradation. It is essential for all stakeholders to work together to ensure sustainable and ethical mining practices that benefit both the industry and the communities it impacts.
