Minister of Power Threatens to Revoke Licenses of Electricity Distribution Companies

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has issued a stern warning to electricity distribution companies in Nigeria over the persistent issue of erratic power supply across the nation. In a statement released after a crucial meeting with key industry players, Adelabu expressed his disappointment at the continued decline in power supply despite efforts to address the situation.

Adelabu emphasized the government’s commitment to holding distribution companies accountable for their performance, stating that non-performance will not be tolerated. He highlighted the importance of repairing damaged transmission infrastructure to improve supply in affected regions and mentioned ongoing efforts to settle outstanding debts owed to electricity generation companies.

“As the Minister of Power, I am deeply concerned about the deteriorating electricity supply across the country. In response to this pressing issue, I have summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), as well as the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to a crucial meeting. This meeting aims to discuss the worsening power supply in their respective regions and collectively find lasting solutions,” Adelabu stated.

The Minister’s strong stance on the matter comes after a recent increase in power generation to over 4000MW, with distribution companies failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by TCN. Vandalism of power infrastructure has further exacerbated the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.

In light of these challenges, Adelabu has instructed TCN to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to enhance supply in affected areas. He also reassured electricity consumers of ongoing efforts to address the issues at hand and improve service delivery nationwide.

The Minister’s decisive actions underscore the government’s determination to tackle the longstanding issue of power supply in Nigeria. With the threat of license revocation looming over non-performing distribution companies, the message is clear – accountability and performance are non-negotiable in the quest for a reliable and efficient electricity supply system.

Media Talk Africa reported that Adelabu had previously summoned AEDC, IBEDC, and TCN CEOs to address the worsening power supply situation, signaling a proactive approach to resolving the crisis.
