In a recent development at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, a forensic document examiner, Bamaiyi Haruna, revealed that documents used to release $6.2 million from the Central Bank of Nigeria in February 2023 were found to be forged. This revelation came during the trial of the former CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, who was accused of impersonating the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to illegally move the funds.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought forward amended charges against Emefiele, alleging that he collaborated with an individual named Odoh Ocheme to obtain the money from the CBN under false pretenses. The EFCC claimed that Emefiele forged documents to support his actions, including a letter dated January 26, 2023, and a directive on foreign election observer missions.
During the trial, Boss Mustapha, the former SGF, testified against Emefiele, stating that neither he nor ex-President Muhammadu Buhari were aware of the $6.2 million transaction. Mustapha highlighted discrepancies in the signatures and correspondence, indicating that the documents were not authentic.
Further analysis by the forensic expert, Haruna, confirmed that the signatures on the disputed documents did not match the authentic signatures of the individuals involved. The court admitted the forensic report and other documents as evidence, marking them as Exhibits FDE.
Emefiele’s lawyer did not oppose the submission of the evidence, and the trial was adjourned until March 11 for further proceedings. The case continues to unfold as the truth behind the alleged forgery and financial misconduct is brought to light.
