The Minister of State for Health, Dr Tunji Alausa, has raised concerns about the prevalence of quacks in the health industry, attributing their presence to the disturbing practice of organ harvesting in Nigeria.
During a visit to the governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, Dr Alausa emphasized the urgent need for legislation to regulate the healthcare sector and crack down on unqualified individuals operating within it. He highlighted the alarming lack of oversight in private healthcare facilities, where illegal activities like organ harvesting often occur.
In response to these challenges, the Federal Government is planning to establish a Health Facility Regulatory Commission to set and enforce standards for healthcare nationwide. Additionally, a new program will aim to increase the number of medical students and nurses admitted annually to address the shortage of healthcare providers.
Governor Abiodun pledged to support federal efforts to combat quackery in the health sector and ensure the availability of quality healthcare services in Ogun State. He emphasized the importance of regulating traditional birth attendants and increasing the number of trained medical practitioners to meet the healthcare needs of the state’s growing population.
By strengthening collaboration between federal and state governments, both officials are committed to revitalizing Nigeria’s healthcare system and improving access to essential medical services for all citizens.
