The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised concerns about the actions of the Ademola Adeleke administration, accusing them of creating unnecessary tension in the region. The party specifically pointed out Governor Adeleke’s interference in the selection of traditional monarchs in Iree and Igbajo towns.
During the previous administration led by Adegboyega Oyetola, Adegboyega Famodun and Raphael Oluponle were appointed as the Owa of Igbajo and Aree of Iree respectively. However, Governor Adeleke, upon assuming office in November 2022, halted the processes that led to the installation of these monarchs through an Executive Order. Subsequently, a review panel set up by the state government nullified the previous selections and called for a fresh process.
Recently, the state government approved the appointment of Muritala Oyelakin as the Aree of Iree. Additionally, sources revealed that Dr. Ademola Makinde has been selected as the new Owa of Igbajo, although the official announcement is pending.
The Osun APC, in a statement by its chairman Tajudeen Lawal, criticized the government’s actions, stating that the appointments of the monarchs were in line with the customs and traditions of the communities. Lawal expressed disappointment in the disregard for cultural norms and the use of non-residents in the selection process.
The party questioned the legitimacy of monarchs selected through what they deemed as illegal means and criticized Governor Adeleke for his handling of the situation. They called for respect for the traditional and academic institutions in Osun State and urged the government to prioritize peace and stability in the region.
The situation in Osun State has sparked concerns among residents and political observers, with many calling for a resolution that respects the customs and traditions of the communities involved. The actions of the government have raised questions about governance and the protection of cultural heritage in the state.
