In a powerful address during the World’s Women’s Day 2024 celebration in Samoa, Minister of Women Community and Social Development, Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molioo, called upon the nation to unite in empowering women and girls to reach their full potential. Recognizing the remarkable contributions of Samoan women across various sectors, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for increased public safety measures to combat the prevalent issue of violence against women in the country.
Minister Ale-Molioo proudly announced that Samoa has made significant progress towards gender equality, with women holding 33% of board directorships nationally, surpassing both regional and global averages. Women are excelling in fields such as public administration, finance, health, and education, with a strong presence in senior executive positions within the public sector. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in the agricultural sector and in terms of women’s representation in decision-making roles.
Addressing the concerning statistics on gender-based violence in Samoa, the Minister revealed that 38% of women have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner. She unequivocally denounced such acts and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preventing family violence and safeguarding women and girls. The Minister commended the establishment of the inter-agency Essential Services Guide for Responding to Cases of Gender-Based Violence and Child Protection as a significant step towards providing survivor-centered support services.
Advocating for the prioritization of women and girls’ safety in public spaces, particularly in public transport systems where incidents of harassment have been reported, Ale-Molioo urged for the implementation of protective measures such as deploying security personnel on buses to ensure the safety of female passengers. Her speech emphasized the importance of collective action and community support in addressing the challenges faced by Samoan women and girls.
The Minister’s poignant message on World’s Women’s Day 2024 in Samoa serves as a rallying cry against gender-based violence and a testament to the resilience and potential of women. By fostering an environment of respect, safety, and equality, Samoa can continue its journey towards a future where all women and girls are empowered to thrive.
