In a dramatic turn of events in Edo State, the House of Assembly recently issued an impeachment notice against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. This move sparked outrage among hundreds of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in Edo North senatorial district, who took to the streets in a peaceful protest to denounce the impeachment attempt.
The protesters, comprised of supporters, grassroots mobilizers, and admirers of Deputy Governor Shaibu, gathered at Jattu Junction in Etsako West Local Government, brandishing placards with powerful messages rejecting the impeachment. They voiced their belief that the allegations against Shaibu were baseless and driven by political motives.
The Edo North PDP Rescue Movement (ENREM) led the protest, with spokesperson Hon Festus Owu condemning the actions of those behind the impeachment. Owu specifically called out Governor Godwin Obaseki for his role in the proceedings, reminding him of Shaibu’s right to pursue his ambition to become the state’s governor.
The protesters highlighted the importance of unity within the party and criticized the silence of the PDP National Working Committee, questioning their involvement in the impeachment plot. They urged all stakeholders to prioritize peace and collaboration to ensure a successful outcome in the upcoming governorship election.
Owu emphasized the need for good governance and representation in Edo State, urging the State House of Assembly to focus on serving the people rather than engaging in divisive actions. He called on Speaker Blessing Agbebaku to act in the best interests of the people who elected him.
As tensions rise in Edo State, the call for unity, peace, and effective leadership becomes more urgent than ever. The fate of Deputy Governor Shaibu hangs in the balance, as the state braces for a critical period of political uncertainty.
