The Nigerian Government is taking bold steps to address the country’s electricity supply issues, with plans to increase power generation to 6,000 megawatts in the next three to six months. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this announcement during a meeting with key agencies in Abuja, emphasizing the need for urgent action to tackle the current 4,000MW generation capacity, which he deemed unacceptable.

Adelabu highlighted the Electricity Distribution Companies as the weakest link in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, stressing the importance of holding them accountable for improving electricity supply across the nation. He emphasized the need to compel Discos to perform better in order to enhance the overall power distribution system.

“We are committed to ramping up power generation to a minimum of 6,000 megawatts within the next three to six months. Despite facing challenges such as gas shortages, our generating companies have the capacity to meet this target. Distribution is crucial as it is the final link to consumers. Without efficient distribution, our efforts to increase power generation will be in vain,” Adelabu stated.

The Minister urged for a collective effort to address distribution issues and ensure that Nigerians have access to reliable electricity. By focusing on improving distribution networks and addressing operational challenges, the government aims to enhance the overall power supply infrastructure and meet the growing energy demands of the country.

With a clear roadmap in place, Nigeria is poised to overcome its electricity supply challenges and provide a more stable and efficient power supply for its citizens. The government’s commitment to increasing power generation signals a positive step towards addressing the longstanding issue of electricity shortages in the country.
