EFCC Affirms Anambra State Government Not Defendant in Obiano Trial

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that the Anambra State Government is not a defendant in the trial of former governor Willie Obiano. Despite the government’s appeal challenging the EFCC’s authority to investigate and try him, the commission maintains that the appeal is irrelevant to the charges against Obiano.

Obiano, who is facing nine charges of alleged N4bn theft, has requested the court to dismiss the charges against him, claiming that the court lacks jurisdiction to address issues related to security vote funds. The EFCC, in response, argues that the charges and evidence presented establish a prima facie case against Obiano, emphasizing that the case is not a result of witch-hunting but a legitimate effort to combat economic and financial crimes.

During the recent court proceedings, the defendant’s counsel urged the court to grant Obiano’s prayers, while the EFCC’s counsel emphasized that security votes can be investigated if misappropriated. The trial judge has adjourned the case until April 18, 2024, for a ruling on Obiano’s application.

It is essential to note that the Anambra State Government’s appeal does not impact the ongoing trial, and the EFCC remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice in this matter. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
