In a significant political shift, members of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Akwa Ibom State have made the decision to defect to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This move, which took place at a ceremony held at the Ibom Hall ground in Uyo, the state capital, saw chapter Chairmen and State Officers of YPP from all 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom join the PDP.
During the handover of leadership and structure to the state PDP Chairman, Elder Aniekan Akpan, Prince Kini Ikpeme of the former National/State YPP Youths Caucus explained that the decision to switch parties was driven by a desire to support Governor Umo Eno in implementing the administration’s policies and programs under the ‘ARISE Agenda.’
“We were determined to stand firm in the sinking ship of the YPP, but now we pledge to double our efforts and stand with Governor Umo Eno throughout his tenure,” Ikpeme stated. “We commit to upholding the rules and regulations of the PDP and remaining loyal to our party.”
Rt. Elder Aniekan Akpan, the State Chairman of the PDP, welcomed the defectors back to the party, praising their decision as a demonstration of their love for Akwa Ibom State. He emphasized the importance of unity in supporting the state’s progress and development, especially as the focus shifts from elections to governance.
Hon. Frank Archibong, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, commended the defectors for aligning themselves with progress by returning to the PDP and backing Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda. He highlighted the Governor’s exceptional leadership and expressed confidence in the defectors’ decision to join the party that has historically delivered successful administrations in Akwa Ibom State.
Hon. Ini Akpan, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Matters, extended a warm welcome to the defectors, assuring them of inclusion and collaboration in advancing Governor Eno’s youth-friendly agenda. The move to the PDP was seen as a strategic choice to align with a party that has a track record of governance excellence in the state.
The defection of YPP members to the PDP in Akwa Ibom State marks a significant political realignment, with implications for the state’s future direction under Governor Umo Eno’s leadership. As the state transitions into a new phase of governance, the unity and support of all parties involved will be crucial in driving progress and development for the benefit of the people of Akwa Ibom.
