The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, will not be stepping down from his position, according to the Senate spokesman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu. This statement comes in response to the demand by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Akpabio to resign following the suspension of Bauchi Central Senator Abdul Ningi.
Ningi was suspended for three months due to his claims of N3.7 trillion in budget padding, prompting the PDP to call for Akpabio’s resignation to allow for an immediate investigation into the allegations. However, Adaramodu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, dismissed the demand, labeling it as an attempt by the PDP to deceive the public.
In a statement to journalists, Adaramodu stated, “The PDP has resorted to deceit in their futile attempt to discredit the allegations of budget padding. The call for Senator Godswill Akpabio to resign as Senate President is baseless and reflects the party’s inclination towards falsehood and unethical behavior.”
He further emphasized that Akpabio has no intention of resigning as he has not engaged in any misconduct that would warrant his resignation. The Senate remains steadfast in its support of Akpabio, who is determined to continue serving in his role.
The controversy surrounding the suspension of Senator Ningi and the subsequent call for Akpabio’s resignation has sparked debate within political circles. However, Akpabio’s decision to remain in his position signifies his commitment to upholding his responsibilities as Senate President.
As the situation unfolds, the Senate’s stance on the matter remains clear – Akpabio will not be resigning, and the focus will continue to be on legislative duties and serving the Nigerian people.
