In February, Nigeria saw a significant increase in food inflation, reaching 37.92% compared to 35.41% in January 2024, reflecting the ongoing economic challenges faced by the country. The National Bureau of Statistics recently released its consumer price index and inflation report, highlighting a 2.51% month-on-month rise in food inflation.
Year-on-year, food inflation surged by 13.57%, a notable increase from the 24.35% recorded in February 2023. This spike in food prices can be attributed to the rising costs of bread and cereals, potatoes, yams, other tubers, and fish.
In addition to the food inflation, headline inflation also saw an uptick, reaching 31.70% in February, up from 29.90% in January 2024, further exacerbating the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
These inflationary pressures are adding to the already existing hardships faced by many in Nigeria, making it increasingly difficult for households to afford basic necessities. As the country grapples with these economic challenges, it is crucial for policymakers to implement measures to alleviate the burden on the population.
