The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area 1 Command, made a significant interception recently, uncovering 940 rounds of ammunition valued at N557,120,828.00 hidden in sacks of garri (cassava flakes) at the Idiroko axis of the state. This revelation came to light during a media conference held by the Area Controller, Ahmadu Shuaibu, in Idiroko, Ogun.

According to Mr. Shuaibu, the Command had been diligently tracking a smuggling cartel from the Republic of Benin for over two weeks. The operation culminated in the discovery of the ammunition concealed within the garri sacks. Despite the suspects managing to evade capture, the Command’s vigilance and security measures led to the seizure of the items.

In addition to the ammunition, the Command also seized 123 sacks and 3,172 parcels of cannabis sativa, 380 pieces of donkey skin, 304 bales of used clothes, and 910 cartons of frozen poultry products, among other items. These seizures, made possible through the Command’s intelligence network and round-the-clock patrol activities, amounted to a Duty Paid Value of N557,120,828.00.

Mr. Shuaibu emphasized the Command’s commitment to ensuring zero casualties during operations, highlighting the value placed on the lives of its personnel. He also urged the public to support the fight against smuggling, particularly of dangerous substances and weapons that pose a threat to national security.

Furthermore, the Controller acknowledged the support of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, and his management team in enhancing the Command’s operations. He commended the efforts of the Customs Intelligence Unit and customs police Unit, as well as other sister agencies and stakeholders involved in the fight against smuggling.

In conclusion, Mr. Shuaibu expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that have contributed to the Command’s success in intercepting illicit goods and safeguarding the nation’s security.
