The Labour Party Calls for NLC President to Resign and Join Party Leadership Race
The Labour Party has made a bold move by calling on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, to step down from his current position and consider running for the chairmanship of the party. This decision comes in response to what the LP describes as Ajaero’s disruptive behavior that has undermined the progress made by the NLC.
In a statement issued by LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party expressed its determination to proceed with its planned convention in Umuahia, Abia State, despite calls from the NLC Political Commission to suspend the event. The commission also demanded the immediate resignation of the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure.
Ifoh criticized the NLC’s interference in the affairs of the party, highlighting the need for the two entities to operate independently. He emphasized that the Labour Party has its own constitution and autonomy, separate from the Nigeria Labour Congress.
The statement further challenged Ajaero to consider joining the race for the National Chairmanship of the Labour Party, scheduled for March 27, 2024, if he is interested in leadership roles. The LP made it clear that it will not be swayed by external pressures and will continue to uphold its principles and values.
The ongoing power struggle between the NLC and the Labour Party underscores the complexities of political dynamics in Nigeria. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Ajaero and the NLC will respond to the Labour Party’s call for change.
