Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has introduced a groundbreaking initiative to alleviate the economic strain on residents amidst rising inflation. The ‘Ounje Eko’ food markets will offer a 25% discount on essential food items, starting on Sunday, March 17, 2024, across 27 locations in Lagos, including Ikeja.

In a statement by the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, it was revealed that a voucher system will be implemented to ensure fair distribution and prevent any form of exploitation. Independent payment solution providers and food vendors have been carefully selected to oversee the process and provide real-time data for monitoring purposes.

To promote transparency, the prices of staple food items have been clearly outlined. For example, a 5kg bag of rice will be priced at N5,325, with 1kg costing N1,065. Similarly, a 5kg bag of beans will sell for N6,225, with 1kg priced at N1,245. The prices of other essential food items will also be accessible through various media outlets.

The ‘Ounje Eko’ markets will be operational at 27 locations in Ikeja, six in Lagos Island, nine in Ikorodu, five in Epe, and 10 in Badagry divisions. Governor Sanwo-Olu has urged all Lagosians to support this initiative, monitor the process, and provide feedback through official channels of the Lagos State Government.

This innovative approach aims to provide relief to residents facing financial challenges, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting its citizens during these difficult times. Let us come together to make a difference and ensure that everyone has access to affordable and nutritious food.
