South East Board Member Highlights Benefits of North East Development

The South East region of Nigeria is reaping the benefits of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), according to Sam Onuigbo, the representative of the South East on the NEDC Board. In a recent press briefing, Onuigbo highlighted that not only are the people of the North East benefiting from the Commission, but also Igbos living and conducting business in the region.

Established by the Federal Government, the NEDC’s primary goal is to rehabilitate, resettle, and reconstruct communities that have been devastated by insurgency in the North East region. Additionally, the Commission aims to address challenges such as the Lake Chad problem, provide care for Internally Displaced Persons, reduce illiteracy, and promote overall transformation in the region.

Onuigbo emphasized the significant impact of the insurgency on buildings and businesses in the North East, including those owned by Igbos. However, he expressed optimism about the improved security situation in the region, attributing it to initiatives introduced by the Federal Government and supported by international organizations.

The reduction in insecurity has not only benefited the indigenous communities but also individuals from the South East who reside and conduct business in the North East. Onuigbo highlighted the shared experiences of destruction and the collective efforts needed for the development of the region.

“We will actively contribute to the development of the North East. Our people are integral to the fabric of the region, and we are committed to supporting its growth and prosperity,” Onuigbo affirmed.

The collaboration between different regions in Nigeria showcases a united front in overcoming challenges and fostering development. The NEDC serves as a beacon of hope for communities affected by insurgency, demonstrating the power of collective action and solidarity in rebuilding and transforming societies.
