The Nigerian Medical Association in Rivers State has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against medical quackery by apprehending a man who has been posing as a doctor for over two years. Echi Michael, a graduate of Banking and Finance, was caught red-handed with fake documents, including a phony MBBS Certificate from the University of Port Harcourt and a forged MDCN full registration certificate.
The arrest was made after an extensive period of surveillance when Michael applied for a job as a Medical Officer at Port Harcourt Military Hospital, where he had been falsely claiming to work. The NMA’s Anti-quackery Committee, led by Dr. Ebbi Robinson and Dr. Hope Avundaa, played a crucial role in uncovering the imposter.
Michael’s fraudulent activities highlight the ongoing issue of quackery in the medical profession, with stakeholders expressing concern over the prevalence of individuals posing as healthcare professionals. The training of auxiliary nurses by private doctors has been identified as a contributing factor to the problem, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations and enforcement.
The NMA has assured the public that Michael will face prosecution for his actions, sending a strong message that such deceitful practices will not be tolerated. The collaboration between the NMA and the military hospital authorities is a positive step towards ensuring the integrity and credibility of the healthcare system in Rivers State.
As the fight against medical quackery continues, it is essential for the government and relevant authorities to take decisive action to root out imposters and protect the well-being of the public. The NMA’s vigilance and dedication to upholding professional standards serve as a beacon of hope for a safer and more trustworthy healthcare environment in Rivers State.
