Amidst a heated leadership battle within the Labour Party (LP), tensions have escalated as the party’s National Working Committee accuses Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), of a power grab. The LP, in a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, on Saturday, responded to an open letter from the NLC Political Commission, alleging that the LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, was planning a ‘secret’ national convention to extend his tenure.
The LP denounced the NLC’s interference, emphasizing that the party has its own autonomy separate from the NLC. The LP reaffirmed its commitment to holding the convention as scheduled on March 27, despite the NLC’s objections.
The LP criticized the NLC’s leadership under Joe Ajero, accusing them of destructive behavior and unwarranted meddling in the party’s affairs. The LP highlighted the need for the NLC to focus on its core mandate of defending workers’ rights, rather than engaging in political power struggles.
Furthermore, the LP refuted allegations made by the NLC, asserting that the party is in compliance with its constitution and has no outstanding court judgments against it. The LP called for transparency and accountability, inviting external auditors to review its financial records.
In a bold move, the LP challenged the NLC to redirect its efforts towards supporting the party’s growth and advocating for the interests of Nigerian workers. The LP emphasized the importance of unity in combating the ruling class and advancing the nation’s development.
As the LP prepares for its upcoming convention, it remains steadfast in its commitment to democratic processes and inclusive governance. The party calls on the NLC to respect its independence and work collaboratively towards a stronger future for all Nigerians.
Signed,
Obiora Ifoh
