U.S. Delegation Meets with Nigerien Officials Over Russia, Iran Relations

Last week, a U.S. delegation held crucial discussions with Nigerien officials in Washington, DC, raising concerns about Niger’s potential ties with Russia and Iran, as well as the status of U.S. forces in the country. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh addressed the media today, highlighting the importance of mutual respect and cooperation while emphasizing Niger’s sovereignty.

The delegation, led by Marine Corps Gen. Michael Langley, Mary Catherine Phee, and Celeste Wallander, engaged in extensive talks with Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, cabinet members, civil society organizations, and advisors from the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, Niger’s ruling military junta. Diplomats from partner nations and international organizations also participated in the meetings.

Following Niger’s announcement on March 16 regarding the termination of the status of forces agreement with the United States, the Defense Department is actively seeking clarification through diplomatic channels. Currently, there are approximately 1,000 U.S. military personnel, including contractors, stationed in Niger. Since the coup on July 26 last year, their focus has shifted to force protection and consolidation from Air Base 101 in Niamey to Air Base 201 in Agadez. The previous counterterrorism mission has been put on hold since the coup.

Last year’s military coup in Niger led to the removal of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum and the installment of Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani as the new leader. The formation of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, also known as the CNSP, followed the coup, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
