Fourteen people tragically lost their lives, and 37 others were injured in a devastating bus crash inside an expressway tunnel in northern China. The incident occurred around 2:30 pm local time on Tuesday, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV, citing local authorities in Shanxi province. The bus, carrying 51 passengers, collided with the tunnel’s interior wall, leading to the tragic outcome.
State news agency Xinhua confirmed the number of casualties without providing details on the survivors’ conditions. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the accident. Unfortunately, road accidents are not uncommon in China due to a lack of strict safety regulations.
In a separate incident, a South Korea-flagged chemicals tanker with 11 crew members capsized in rough seas off Japan. Five individuals remain unaccounted for, while six have been rescued so far. The coastguard is actively searching for the missing crew members. The tanker was carrying acrylic acid, and there are concerns about potential leaks into the ocean.
Footage from Japanese broadcaster NHK showed the overturned red hull of the ship and a life raft, with rescue operations underway amidst heavy waves. The crew alerted the coastguard about the vessel tilting near the island of Mutsure, prompting a swift response to the distress call.
The Japan Coast Guard received the rescue call early on Wednesday, indicating the urgent situation onboard the vessel. The tanker, identified as the Keoyoung Sun, is a chemical and oil products tanker built in 1996. The ship’s operator has not provided any comments on the incident.
These tragic events serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced in maritime and road transportation, highlighting the importance of stringent safety measures to prevent such devastating accidents. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
