Former Street Vendors Relocated to Duhahirane Market in Gisozi Sector, Gasabo District

In a bid to address the aftermath of the demolition of the Gisozi market in 2022, the City of Kigali has taken proactive steps to support former street vendors who were displaced by the closure. A total of 194 ex-street vendors have been relocated to the Duhahirane market in Gisozi sector, Gasabo District, providing them with a new space to continue their businesses.

Martine Urujeni, Vice Mayor of the City of Kigali, shared that the city has not only facilitated the relocation of these vendors but has also paid their rent at the new market and provided them with capital loans through the Vision Umurenge Programme (VUP) financial services. This initiative aims to empower these vendors and help them establish themselves in their new environment.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain as some street vendors are hesitant to engage in the new markets they have been placed in. Urujeni emphasized that the City of Kigali is actively working to address this reluctance through awareness campaigns and outreach programs to encourage participation.

To regulate the operation of small markets and prevent illegal trading, the City Council enacted a regulation on December 2, 2022. This regulation has led to the establishment of three new markets across Gasabo, Kicukiro, and Nyarugenge districts, offering a total of 4,199 slots for former street vendors. The goal is to provide a structured and sustainable environment for these vendors to thrive and integrate into development programs for a prosperous future.

As the city moves forward, the focus is on empowering former street vendors and ensuring their successful transition into the new markets, ultimately paving the way for a brighter future for each individual involved. The City of Kigali remains committed to supporting these vendors and fostering a conducive environment for their growth and development.
