Foreign airlines operating in Nigeria are expressing skepticism over the Central Bank of Nigeria’s recent announcement regarding the settlement of outstanding foreign exchange claims. Despite the CBN’s claim of clearing a $7 million backlog, the President of the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives in Nigeria, Kingsley Nwokoma, revealed that approximately $700 million belonging to foreign airlines remains trapped in the country.
In a recent interview with Leadership, Nwokoma challenged the CBN to provide evidence of payment to support their assertion of clearing the backlog. He emphasized the importance of transparency, urging the CBN to disclose the details of payments made to foreign airlines.
Nwokoma highlighted the discrepancy between the CBN’s claims and the reality faced by foreign airlines, who are still awaiting payment of their dues. Despite previous announcements by the CBN regarding the settlement of foreign exchange claims, foreign airlines continue to voice concerns over the significant amount owed to them.
The lack of clarity and transparency surrounding the issue has raised doubts among foreign airlines operating in Nigeria. As the debate continues, the demand for accountability and proof of payment remains a pressing issue for the aviation industry in the country.
