In accordance with the directives from the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Edo State Council of the Union has taken action by picketing the State Secretariat of the Labour Party (LP).
The decision to picket all State secretariats of the Labour Party across the country was made following allegations of financial impropriety and contempt of court against the National Chairman of the Party, Julius Abure.
On Thursday in Benin City, members of the union, led by Suleiman Abubakar, the State Vice Chairman of NLC, gathered to protest against what they perceive as Abure’s mismanagement of the party, likening it to a personal business.
Abubakar emphasized that the Labour Party belongs to the NLC and should be inclusive in all decision-making processes. He also made it clear that the NLC will not tolerate any attempts by Abure to unilaterally select a candidate for the position of national chairman.
The picketing was initially scheduled for Wednesday but was delayed due to challenges in mobilizing members. Abubakar highlighted the importance of resolving differences through proper channels and adhering to democratic principles.
In response, Sam Uroupa, the Publicity Secretary of the Party in Edo State, criticized the NLC for allegedly neglecting the welfare of workers and focusing on political matters instead. He pointed out the pressing issues facing workers, such as low wages and high living costs, suggesting that the NLC should prioritize these concerns.
The clash between the NLC and the Labour Party underscores the complex dynamics of labor relations and political activism in Nigeria. As tensions escalate, the need for dialogue and cooperation becomes increasingly vital to address the challenges facing workers and the broader society.
