The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is taking a proactive approach to combat illegal migration through the Lagos waterways by strengthening collaboration with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS). This strategic partnership aims to enhance waterway operations and curb the illegal movement of individuals.

During a recent meeting between the new Comptroller of Immigration Service for Lagos Seaports and Marine Command, Joseph Dada, and the Lagos Area Manager of NIWA, Sarat Braimah, both agencies emphasized the importance of working together to address the challenges posed by illegal migration.

Dada highlighted the need for people to migrate legally, emphasizing the importance of obtaining passports and visas through the appropriate channels. He also expressed concern about the prevalence of human trafficking, particularly among Nigerian women who are often deceived with false job offers.

Braimah echoed the sentiment of collaboration, noting that both NIWA and NIS are committed to the common good of Nigeria. She emphasized the role of migration in fostering tourism, culture, and development but stressed the importance of preventing illegal migration.

As part of the collaboration, NIWA is prepared to assist NIS in conducting migration checks on passengers boarding ferries from Marina jetty to destinations such as Badagry and Port Novo. NIWA is also willing to provide training and equipment, such as boats and life-jackets, to support NIS officials in their efforts to ensure safe and legal migration.

By joining forces, NIWA and NIS are working towards a shared goal of promoting legal migration and safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s waterways. This collaboration not only strengthens operational efficiency but also underscores the commitment of both agencies to upholding the rule of law and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
